VA: Reading Response - Week 2/team2 readings

Graphic Agitation: Social and political graphics since the sixties

There have been politics ever since man first started to become civilizations and somewhere along the line, art and politic found overlapping interest. Almost every era had propaganda whether it was Jesus Christ or the US military. An art teacher once told me that if I ever wanted to become a successful artist you have to be politically conscious. This statement has stuck with me ever since and has influenced my career choices a lot. Graphic design has obviously had huge impact with politics and as new designers, it is something we need to carry on. One of the artist mentioned in this article was Jose Posada, the Mexican engraver best known for his Day of the Dead influence. He has been dead for 100 years and to this day his work still reminds his people that we must always embrace our native culture. His work has reconnected me to my culture, so yea design and politics are basically coexisting entities for me.

Visualizing A Revolution: Emory Douglas and the Black Panther Newspaper

This reading discussed the works of Emory for the Black Panther Newspaper and how it affected the movement. A movement that could have used all the support It could, unfortunately it only had support from the black community for obvious reasons. This may have seemed like a setback, but It could be the very reason why the newspaper had such an impact. With supporters that were directly affected by the movement they used their strong passions for the movement to create an iconic publication, Emory was one of these supporters. His work expressed the feelings of the black community so greatly because he himself experience the racism and unjust was a black man. He used brutal imagery to get his message across, the work needed to be powerful as he was fighting a revolution. He also used his artwork to give his people a sense of power this was especially important it was something the poor and oppressed needed. To the outsiders(non-black) the work may have seemed violent, especially from Douglas' offensive "pig" works. This and other reasons caused the paper to be a threat to the government. Eventually the FBI put in all its efforts to shut the publication down. Emory used the power of design the give "Power to the people".

Design of Dissent: Introduction & Interview with Milton Glaser

Other than make me despise the word dissent this reading was one of the most insightful pieces. It got really political which I enjoyed, politic is one of my favorite subjects. The discussion kicked off with dissent being a positive thing for America (In my personal opinion I believe this to be true). Glaser goes on to discuss how dissent can be used in maybe ways to shape our society. He helps explain how violent and nonviolent dissent both have their place. As designer we must used our communication skills to know how to express our message. It is also mentioned how the area of design get work from many non professionals which supports that training is not necessary its all about communicating ideas well. With that they eventually is discuss the effects of where and how the media is displayed can also affect the outcome of the message. Glaser finally express how important graphic dissent is to expressing dissent to protect our democracy.
